How to Create Puffy Pillows in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn  to create puffy pillows in wide variety of colors. For this, we are not going to use any stock images. Don’t worry about your skills if you are a beginner,  we simply use few tools get this pillow effect. So, let’s get started!

Step-1

Open a new file with 1024×640 size, which is not compulsory, you may take any size as per your requirement. Now, draw a rectangle with “Selection Tool” in new layer.

Step-2

Fill it with white color.

Step-3

Select “Subtract from selection” and set  Feather to 15px.

Step-4

Subtract the area from the selection in the following way.

Step-5

Select “Gradient Tool”  and set its parameters in the following way.

Step-6

Draw multiple gradients in the following way.

Step-7

Press  “Ctrl + D” and go to  Filters>>Stylize>>Emboss. You get result something like this.

Step-8

Press “Ctrl + L” to get “Levels” parameters.

Using this, remove gray color as much as possible. I got result something like this.

Step-9

Using “Clone stamp tool” lets remove internal rectangle bump.

Step-10

Go to  Filter>>Liquify and spherify the image with the following tool.

You should get result like this.

Step-11

In the same Liquify tool select  “Wrap Tool” and uneven(slightly) the edges of the image like this.

Step-12

Now, select rectangle selection tool with feather value 25.

Step-13

Inverse the selection (Ctrl + Shift + I)

Increase the Darkness using “Curves” (Ctrl + M) to get the following result.

Step-15

Similarly  select the central part with same feather value.

Increase the Brightness using “Curves” (Ctrl + M).

Note:  You can select as much area as you want to increase brightness as per your convenience.

Finally you successfully created pillow. Now lets color it.

Step-16

Select the image (press Ctrl + “pillow layer”)

Step-17

In new layer (it must be above the pillow layer) fill the selection with any color you like. For instance Blue.

Step-18

In layers palette, set the “Blending mode” to “Linear Light” to get the following result.

Step-19

Merge these two layers. Now using  “Hue/Saturation” (Ctrl + U) to blue pillow, you can create wide variety of colored pillows like this.
